Doris began swimming at age 11 at the Detroit Turners.
Began swimming for the IAC at age 18, in 1953, right after graduating from High
School.
While swimming for the IAC, she received a degree in Dental Hygiene from the
Indiana Dental School in 1955.
In 1953, Doris placed 6th in the National Championship 110 yd. Breastroke (fly). Also, in 1953, with Linda and Brenda Barton, Doris won the National Junior Three-Mile Team Championship at Shakamak.
In 1954, Doris placed 2nd in the 100 yd. butterfly in the AAU National Short Course Championships. Also, she was a member of the IAC 400 yd. Medley Relay that placed 2nd. She placed 4th in the 100 meter butterfly Outdoor Championships. Also, in the Outdoors, her 400 m. Medley Relay Team placed 4th and she placed 6th in the 200 m. Breastroke. In Junior National Championships, she was a member of the 1st place 400 yd. freestyle relay.
In the U.S. Masters Swimming Championships, August 1996, she won four events and placed 2nd in another. She was never beaten in Wisconsin Masters Swimming, including all first places in the annual Badger Games. She was listed in the Top Ten U.S. Swimmers every year in six or seven events from age 50 to 65.
She was the first swimmer elected to the Wisconsin Senior Olympics Hall of Fame. She won every event she entered in the Wisconsin Senior Olympics.
